This meant a new steering wheel, dashboard, and seats to create a more airy ambiance. When the CX-5 was updated for 2017, the cabin saw the biggest changes. So that versatility in sharing the mechanical pieces means it can keep cutting costs in production and reflect the savings onto the customers. Mazda recognized this is what buyers want on an affordable level. Ignoring opulence, old luxury traits usually come down to quietness and refinement, a staple element followed typically by brands like Rolls-Royce and Mercedes-Benz. This is where Mazda starts to come into its own. But how did the CX-5 bring luxury to the compact crossover segment? Suddenly, CX-5 sales jumped and customers can't get enough of it, to the point that the CX-5 consistently outsells the rest of the brand lineup combined on a yearly basis. A substantial refresh for 2017 reveals a more substantial exterior design, higher-quality materials, and improved NVH levels to mirror luxury cars in exchange for a lower price. The other part of the company's ambition is to push the brand onto a more premium level. Mazda didn't wait to update the CX-5, with them wanting to mold it into the darling they envisioned in the first place. Once they could achieve consistent demand with popularity, they could commence with phase two. It would be a short few years before they sell enough units to count six figures. This was the hit Mazda needed to survive. The more powerful 2.5-liter motor would arrive a year later. Updated SkyActiv underpinnings meant the CX-5 could achieve up to 35 MPG on the highway with the 2.0-liter engine. With the new chassis and Kodo design language, it was a breath of fresh air for the brand to signify a new start. Revealed for 2013, this was the replacement for the CX-7.
